Discover the distinctive Grimes Golden apple from Kauffman’s Orchard, a historic American apple variety with roots dating back to the early 1800s. Despite its name, Grimes Golden apples can have green skin when freshly harvested, gradually developing more golden coloring as they mature.
Grimes Golden was discovered on the farm of Thomas Grimes near Wellsburg, West Virginia, and is believed to be one of the parent varieties of the beloved Golden Delicious. The original tree reportedly produced fruit for more than 100 years.
These apples are prized for their crisp, juicy flesh and complex sweet, aromatic flavor, with subtle spicy and nutty notes. Delicious eaten fresh, they are also excellent for applesauce, baking, cider, and cooking.
A special Pennsylvania apple harvest in 2026: This year's Pennsylvania apple crop has been particularly challenging. Multiple spring freezes, including the severe late-April freeze, caused devastating damage to orchards across the state. Pennsylvania growers reported losses ranging from significant reductions to near-total apple crop losses in some orchards.
That makes this year's locally grown apples especially worth celebrating. When you choose Pennsylvania apples, you're supporting local orchards through an exceptionally difficult growing season.
