Food waste and how to minimize it, save money too.
Hello dears!
Let's talk about the food waste.
Good quality organic food is expensive, even at wholesale prices, and sometimes I think that we are spending a lot.
I will not buy certain food conventionally, even if it's 5 times cheaper.
There are some ways to save money and buy healthy food for our family.
I would rarely buy coffee outside of home, even more rarely we would take out, and eating out is a treat, for social meetings and celebrations mostly.
Our meals are simple, with a few ingredients. All that keeps food waste at minimum.
I also find some rotten veggies that were not eaten. It's OK, don't feel bad, but do your best.
It's a learning experience for me as well...
Here is what I do to minimize food waste and to have a bigger budget for great healthy products.
1. Leftovers - makes a great lunch.
2. I freeze herbs, if I see that will not be used, I chop it and freeze.
3. I freeze meals too.
4. Freezing fruits and veggies. No need to throw it away.
5. I cook intuitively, not by recipes, but what I have in my pantry and fridge.
6. All of our meats are frozen. That is a huge plus! It makes more difficult to cook in a hurry, BUT consider buying Instant Pot! I cook chicken broth with frozen meat, it's very easy and fast.
7. Use by/Best date to - in reality it's a suggestion, sniff and look - if it smells and looks ok, ignore that date.
8. The best meals - stir fry, whatever you have, all goes into a pan. Add some eggs - perfect meal for breakfast or dinner.
9. Store food in glass containers. Our milk comes in plastic jugs, my suggestion to keep it fresh longer, keep it overnight so the cream really goes on top, next day, gently shake it and transfer to smaller glass jars or bottles. Keep it closer to refrigerator's back wall, not on doors.
10. Check your refrigerator temperature. It should be around 35 degrees, not over 40, for milk especially.
11. Save scraps - perfect for veggie/bone broths.
12. Share your food with others. It's a small, but a very good deed!
13. Show respect to food. Be thankful to farmers and people that bring food to your table. Say a blessing. Teach kids to grow food and cook together. Visit farms. When you see how much it takes to produce it, you will be more conscious about it!
14. Skip snacking outside of the house too. It is healthier and you will come home hungry and actually eat your healthy food at home.
15. Serve less food, you can always take more if you are still hungry.
16. Don't eat after your loved ones just to save food! Compost it, but don't over eat it :)
